Phillips Avenue Diner, or just 'Diner' as we down-townies like to call it, is best experienced in the summer. Not only are the hours more reasonable (open until at least nine, weekends 'til 10) but the outside patio is great. Once a week you can listen to live, local music while sipping your flavored lemonade, and the other six chat with your friends over an extra thick malt. I give Diner a five rating compared to all diners, not all dining in general. The food is a step above the greasy sogginess you expect from similar establishments. Hamburgers (and veggie ones, to boot!) come with your choice of sides, including fresh seasonal fruit. They have an espresso bar with half a dozen scrumptious looking desserts and even the brunch is delicious. Pay from eight- to twelve dollars and leave stuffed and satisfied, without that icky fried-food feeling.

Has really good food. Service is good too. But you can get the same taste st any other restaurant in town. Just don't stick out like a diner should.

When I think of diner food, I usually think nasty, greasy, and yet wonderfully delicious. The Phillip's Avenue Diner, or just "Diner" as my wife and I have come to call it, more than just a cut above the usual. It's an old school style diner in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls. You might think that by putting that diner type of atmosphere in a downtown setting, you lose something in the process. But the food here is just so good, that it doesn't matter. "Diner" is diner food at it's absolute best. As a vegetarian, the menu is extremely limiting, but that is only to be expected. For those who don't limit themselves to the non-meat options, the menu is pretty extensive for a diner. My standard is the absolutely fantastic gardenburger with fries and a vanilla malt. I have no idea how they do it, but their gardenburger is so much better than any other I've had. They just do absolutely everything well. Everyone we've gone with has come away more than satisfied with their meal. Service has always been top notch and the prices are relatively reasonable. Everyone who works there seems to genuinely enjoy being there, which is another reason why I like it so much. Going to a diner is supposed to be more of a "fun" dining experience, so having a staff that is pleasant can make a big difference. One other thing I should mention is that it is quite popular and seating is somewhat limited (particularly in the winter). If you go during a typical meal time, you may have a short wait. We've never had to wait longer than ten minutes or so for a table, so it's never been an issue for us. Also, because of the limited, diner style booth seating, they can't really accommodate larger groups unless you are willing to be split up. Phillips Avenue Diner is easily my favorite place to eat in Sioux Falls so far, and so is highly recommended. I can't imagine anyone having a disappointing experience there.

So a Californian in town on business walks into a diner looking for a good lunch. Nope - it wasn't there.

This diner was recommended to us by the lovely ladies at the Park Falls, and it did not disappoint! Great prices, a decent beer selection, and the food was tasty. We sat outside around 7pm and it was very relaxing. I had a burger and a salad, and my gf had an amazing concoction called a Kentucky Fried Wrap. It basically had fried chicken, mashed potatoes, tomato, cheese, and ranch, and it was freakin' mmm mmm goooood. I recommend eating here and then seeing the falls around 8-9 pm in the summer; they have a light show about the history of Sioux Falls that starts at 9:30. They also had a sculpture walk-through outside of the Diner, where you could vote for one of about 75 sculptures. Overall a great Diner and a cool city!

While staying in Sioux falls I was rather lucky to have this diner in town. This place is not to be confused with a north eastern style diner, however they offer good food at fair prices. The waitstaff is very helpful and courteous. Get there early, because breakfast stops at 11am! I recommend the eggs Benedict or the meatloaf sandwich.

Initially I was very dissatisfied with this place. I was seated quickly but then sat there for 15 minutes with NO acknowledgment from any of the waitstaff. No coffee, water, nothing. There had to be 4 waitresses and two busboys buzzing right around me. Nothing. Then, just as I was about to get up and leave, a forlorn, young waitress appeared and apologized for taking so long. She was obviously new so I decided to stay and order breakfast. The omelet was very good. The whole meal was above average for a diner. Glad I stayed.

Delish and our waitress kelly was a sweetheart and accommodated our vegetarian needs. My veggie omelet turned scramble w/ her suggested added cheese was great, and my old mans two plus two plus two (the last 2 being meat) she was able to turn into eggs n blueberry pancakes, no added cost and just what he wanted. Good breakfast. Sculpture walk was a nice constitutional pre meal too

The phillips ave diner is my favorite brekfast location in sioux falls. The hostesses & wait staff are great. Food is excellent. Lunch & dinner are equally good. Favorites are the patty melt & hot turkey sandwich. . They have an awesome patio for summer time dining. Also the malts are out of this world.

It's good for what it is, but not for what it pretends to be. Food is fine, but it feels more like a theme park than a diner. It's not an old corner restaurant that's been there for ages and has seen it all, but mere stage scenery with the obligatory old photos on the walls. It's a fun place to eat, but not one for which I could feel any loyalty.

This diner would be a hit in any metropolitan area. Love the focus on breakfast but also like the quality food, reasonable prices, and atmosphere found any time of the day.

This was a wonderful spot to start our vacation off! My family and I went here for lunch and had excellent service and food!! They were able to accomadate our large group very quickly and we didn't seem to slow them down any! We highly recommend this fun place to eat! Make sure to order a shake while you are there! The oreo shake was TO DIE FOR!! Can't wait to go back the next time we are in town :)

A very charming diner in the heart of downtown of Sioux Falls. A pleasant surprise for an evening out. The salad I had was flavorful and fresh. The waitstaff were friendly and prompt. The price was great too! I would recommend to anyone visiting and not sure where to go.

Ah, Diner. I have fond memories of Sioux Falls for many reasons, not the least of which is Diner. I was immediately attracted by its Fifties-style feel, from the exterior to the indoot decor to that sensation that someone in a poodle skirt might just rollerskate by. The staff were helpful, fun and friendly on each occasion that we visited (it's been a while so I'm a bit fuzzy on this, but I think we went twice for supper and once just for dessert). By and large the staff seemed happy to be working at Diner and proud of the establishment itself. The food was definitely a notch above what you would be served in 80% of diners out there, but not too fancy either. Comfort food was available in many forms; I had a variation on macaroni and cheese that was delicious. There were many beverage options: malts, milkshakes, soda, lemonade... I tasted several and was pleased each time. My mark of a good restaurant is the experience of being torn between at least two things on the menu; for one thing, it's proof of a varied menu and for another, if the food I end up choosing is good, I'll probably come back for whatever dish I decided against the first time. This proved to be the case with Diner. Diner is a fantastic choice if you're looking for good quality food, attentive and expedient service, relaxed surroundings and - as another reviewer mentioned - really spectacular bathrooms! For added value, there's the outdoor seating in warmer weather and the excellent location right downtown: both are perfect for people-watching! I live many a mile away, but on my next trip to Sioux Falls, you can bet I'll be having at least one meal at Diner.

I love diner food. This place's food is not good. You'd be better off going kitty-corner to the Dutch place. Now that is good food.

Very good eats. Don't be fooled by the diner name, it has quality food. Great variety of sides to choose from and a wide array of burgers and sandwiches satisfied my party of five. I recommend stopping here if you are in downtown Sioux Falls.

Warning: High chance of quite literally bursting at the seams and falling into a food coma after consuming their breakfast poutine. With that said, don't deprive your body - you know you want it. I was surprised to find poutine on the menu here - being in the Midwest and for breakfast, no less. Needless to say, I decided against my usual eggs benny. Crispy potatoes, cheese curds, meat gravy, bacon, diced tomatoes topped with a glistening sunny side-up. The high caloric content is not for the faint of heart but if you come hungry, it will be the most amazing first bite. It is incredibly rich in flavor and texture. Any other option on the menu will be healthier in comparison and, from what I've heard, does not disappoint. But trust me, the breakfast poutine is worth a try - even if it means you'll still be working it off months later. This place seems to be a local favorite and one of the best in Sioux Falls. Plenty of outdoor seating and view is gorgeous on a sunny day. The only negative was pace as we waited 25 mins+ for our food (Saturday ~9:00am). That and the potential weight gain. But no gain no gain, right?

RATED Ok, great location, pretty good food, friendly service, let's discuss: Mac & Cheese Fritters-OK Poutine-Pretty good, I'd eat this once a year or so. Fried Pickles-Syscos best Cheese Curds Great when your drunk Cuban pretty good, is there a theme going on here? Hot Mashed Potato & Fried Chicken Wrap Creative for Sioux Falls, 1000 calories is OK for something diff.

Too many flys....and it's NOT in the menu. Coffee ....you have to ask for refill...and service is sooooo slllloooowwwwww My "scramble" order arrives...after more than 20min, as "sunny side up"....but I keep it to avoids another 20-30min wait. The hush brown should be call here hush white as they don't serve it brown as it should....not good. Double visit: first and last

I have loved place each time I have visited. Basically anything you order will be fantastic. It can get busy during high volume times but that's to be expected from one of the best places to eat downtown. The service is great and I have always been treated like family. I highly recommend this for an amazing experience!

Quintessential middle America diner that is stuck in a time warp. If traveling through South Dakota stop in for a milk shake and some reminiscing of times past

My wife and I have spent most of our lives on the Pacific Coast, so one might say we have "left coast values".. certainly we care greatly about the big 3 Es: Equality, Environment, and Education, along with the freedom of religion, the right to know what goes into our food, etc. So the uninformed observer might be excused if they are surprised that one of our all-time favorite restaurants is a diner right in the heart of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In many ways this small city represents what we love about America - a thriving downtown, a natural area for which the town is named (really, on a nice night, there are few more enjoyable activities than wandering around these falls - and it seems plenty of people share that opinion, but not so plenty that one can't enjoy themselves), chain hotels and restaurants near I-29 for those who don't want to venture into town, minor league teams in both baseball and hockey, and their own college, Augustana. Perhaps my view of this town would be a little less rose-colored if I were to visit in say January, but so what. As for this restaurant, on our 2014 road trip we actually ate here twice, we were that impressed. So I was happy when planning our 2015 sojourn that Sioux Falls lay at the intersection of our paths, the only city that can lay that claim. And I'm happy to say that our faith was well-rewarded, and our decision to not have lunch that day wise. I found the Jalapeno Burger worthy of my anticipation, nice and juicy (and with a not insignificant kick), with the accompanying Oatmeal Stout being the exact right thing to wash it down. And the proverbial cherry-on-top was the Strawberry Cheesecake Shake. Phillips' markets itself as a classic diner, and more than lives up to it. I often mock people who think everything in the old days was good, but this is an example of something that actually was - no pretension, just quality comfort food.

I stumbled upon this place during my first road trip a year ago. It was so good that I returned again. It has an Americana influenced menu with burgers and sandwiches. The shakes are delicious and so are the desserts. I treated myself this time to a homemade strawberry shake with a juicy cheeseburger and side of fries. Don't expect an upscale experience, this is a diner after all. But what they do they do exceptionally well and speedy. Oh, and the customer service is very friendly.

Probably should have gone with Waffle or a Burger, ordered Spicy pork and andouille sausage Jambalaya, used to Louisiana style didn't recognize it upon presentation (New Cuisine style) didn't break a sweat. Their Malts are definitely old school and their Berry pie was excellent. Great atmosphere and Service was excellent. If I was here longer I might try it again. Overall good experience .

This was the perfect spot for breakfast before heading out of Sioux Falls. Very friendly people, quick service, decent coffee, and delicious food. Priced a hair above a typical diner, but well worth it. We sat outside on the patio, and between the umbrellas, trees, and buildings across the street, it was shaded just right. I had a delicious breakfast platter, complete with biscuits & gravy, eggs, and hash browns. My girlfriend had a half order of blueberry French toast, which turned out to still be a good-sized plate (2 thick slices with a healthy dose of fresh berries).

I have been here a couple of times and the place was cool from the outside. It looked very retro and they justified it calling themselves a diner as it definitely looked and should be called a diner. Inside, it was much nicer than a diner would be in my opinion. It looked like a regular restaurant inside. Last time I was here, I had the hot roast beef while my coworkers had Jambalaya. We all liked it okay and decided we should come here more often when in Sioux Falls. However, it's a little out of the way for us and we never came back for awhile. This week, I went with another coworker (my boss) and thought I would give this place another try. We were in a different mind set than last time though. I was trying to not eat carb and my boss always eats a healthy diet. He went for the blackened salmon salad and I went for the chicken stir fry with extra veggies with no rice. His salmon was okay he said but it was tiny. The salad looked like a side house salad. It didn't look like anything spectacular. I was a bit shocked looking at my meal as it was so puny. I asked for them to replace the rice with extra veggies buf if they did, they didn't give much. It was also very salty and almost uneatable. The chicken also had a weird texture. I made the cardinal sin for an Asian person to order a stir fry at a diner. I am a dumbass. Looking around, the burgers, meatloaf, and hot sandwiches people around us ordered looked amazing. I came to a conclusion about this place - only come here for comfort food and diner food. If you're trying to eat healthy, you may get disappointed. When we came in, there was an employee of the diner that was standing at the front counter. Though he saw us, he didn't greet us. Another guy finally did and he was stellar. He was so nice and personable to a point my boss was telling me that we should recruit him. The guy that didn't greet us turned out to be our server and he was slow as shit and not very good. Wish we had the other guy instead of who we had. Anyway, it was an okay place and a bit hit or miss for me. I'll give it a shot another time and get some good fatty burger, fries, and milkshake.

Great place to eat! Location downtown is really nice and walking distance from shopping. Come on Sundays and enjoy 2 for 1 beers and 10$ all you can drink mimosas! I had the reuben sandwich with sweet potatoe fries. It was very good! My wife had rhe fried chicken and mashed potatoe wrap. Don't knock it till you try it. It was better then I expected. The dinner is really cool with and old feel and the wait staff are .

I'd refer to this as 'classy diner' fare. Service was friendly and smiling, if a touch slow. We were hungover and feeling a bit dodgy, so we didn't mind taking our time with it, though. Pancakes were tasty, bacon was perfectly done, eggs sunny side up came as ordered (but proved to be a bad choice for me personally). My worse for ware compatriot managed to down his entire meal and said everything was super. I saw several people order milkshakes that looked absolutely delicious. Maybe next time? Definitely a local place with a welcoming atmosphere. I'll visit again if I'm in town.

Cute diner in this area, with surprisingly pretty good food. Hubby's breakfast poutine was a hit, and my spaghetti with chili sauce was satisfying. Wish I wasn't on a dairy-free diet because the shakes sound really unique (one of them has nerds!).

We had a nice dinner there. The burgers are wonderful but so are salads and service. A busy and popular local flair haunt in downtown center. Enjoy from dinner to lunch. Nice outdoor patio for the summer. Service was professional and friendly.

Service: I came at 2 pm. That odd hour were service ranges from "I forgot your table" to "I come around frequently and can be super annoying". The service was perfect. Food: diner food with a twist - strawberry spinach salad: always a favorite of mine. The only way to mess up a strawberry spinach salad in the protein. The chicken was amazingly delicious. Well seasoned and cooked well. - pork belly Mac and cheese: Mac and cheese, always a winner. The fat part of a pig, always a winner. The pork belly was pretty good, I've had better but I think it was still a wonderful addition to this classic dish. - pot roast dip with onions and mushrooms: exactly what you would expect. Greasy goodness with a great ratio of meat to onion/mushroom ratio. Overall: this place was adorable with great service (I even filled out the comment card) and a pretty good range of food options.

I've worked in restaurants for a while. When I go out, what I want from food is something that rivals what I can make at home. Phillips Ave Diner accomplishes this seemingly without trying. All of the simple details that are important to running a restaurant are taken case of. Fast attentive and friendly staff, flawlessly prepared food, and cute diner decor. The fried pickles were fresh battered and did not fall apart like other fries pickles I've had in the past. The ranch dipping sauce pairs well. The turkey avocado BLT has crispy soft bread with melted Swiss and a wonderful red pepper mayo spread. The thick cut bacon is excellent as well. The pot roast sandwich was incredible. If a French dip sandwich and a Philly cheese steak had a beautiful baby, this would be it. The French fries were lovely and crispy, covered in a very tasty seasoning. We came here on our way to the badlands and it's definitely worth the 10 minute detour out to Sioux Falls. I know this is all a little overload in the love for this place, but I hope you try it.

Good coffee and tea! The kids did not care for the biscuits and gravy. I thought the gravy was a little soupy and I think the chunks of celery were fine but the kids did not like it. The eggs were poached perfectly. The wait staff were very good and friendly.

I have visited the Downtown Diner many times throughout my time in Sioux Falls. Although the servers are friendly and the food is to die for, it's always a long wait to get in. But I take that as a good sign as they are always full. I would recommend this diner to anyone looking for a pleasant meal

Good, old fashioned diner food. Great for a hangover or any other breakfast occasion. We meandered in there mid morning and were able to get a seat right away. Our server, Kayli, brought us a pair of waters and was patient while we asked about the dishes and took our time making up our minds. I was very appreciative that they didn't have a huge menu spanning 5 pages because I never would have made up my mind! I opted for the Two+Two+Two, with French toast and bacon. The French toast was okay, lacked a lot of flavor to me. I saw they have varieties with bananas and pecans and stuff; the plain is a good background to profile the fruit on. I wish I'd ordered it with strawberries or something to kick it up a notch! Everything else was good, though! Boyfriend opted for the corn beef hash, which looked more like a potato skillet dish than a hash. It's house made, and had big chunks of beef versus the small ground pieces I'm used to seeing. But it goes great with the big chunks of potato, onions and peppers. Not too oily, either. Overall, I'll come back if I ever come back to Sioux Falls. The service was quick and friendly, and the place was very clean. Just get your French toast with some fruit on it; butter and syrup isn't enough!

This was a fun place with an energetic vibe. Too bad the food was average. I did enjoy the vanilla shake. Hamburger was dry and the fries were pretty good. Really not much of a reason to recommend beyond the fun old building.

Love diners! This one is charming. The service was very good -- prompt, friendly, not overbearing. It was quite busy for a weekday, especially slightly after the usual lunch hour. We ordered the Southwest Chicken Wrap, bowl of homemade chili, and West Coast Dog. It was Waffle Wednesday so I honestly wish I had ordered waffles since they were all a few bucks off. Also wish I had tried the milkshakes, as I heard later they are amazing. Only complaint is it was rather cold in the diner while we were eating.

Delicious food at this little old school diner. I had the "kitchen sink burger. " It was so good. A cheeseburger with well seasoned pulled pork and fried mac n cheese balls. Oh yeah!

Top notch service and out of this world food at what on the outside looks like your average "greasy spoon!!!!!" I seek out hot beef sandwhiches all over the U.S. and today I think I found the best one I have had all year long. The roast beef was served at the perfect temperature and was so tender and juicy it needed nothing else to compliment it. Add in the home made mash patatoes with a perfectly made beef gravy (not oversalted like so many i come across) and the house salad full of real greens (spinach, arugula, mixed baby greens and red cabbage) with a side of home made blue cheese dressing with chunks the size of my thumb and this guy left 100% satisfied. To sweeten the deal just a little more the staff graciously gave my group of 5 20% off our individual meals that we were glad to wait for because we had to wait 5 more minutes than they told us.

  • Lisa H.

The food here is very fresh and "clean" which is rare for a diner. A few creative items on the menu were tempting. I went with a cup of French onion soup and the salmon salad. Soup was great, but the salad could have been a little more interesting. The mustard dressing didn't seem to compliment it well, so I asked for blue cheese, which was much better. I'll be honest, I would have liked a little more on my plate, the portions are sensible, and more representative of what we all should be eating. My boys ordered sandwiches and burgers. They also looked tasty, simple and fresh. Our server was super sweet. The restaurant and bathroom were very clean. Not sure I would wait more than 15 minutes to eat here, but glad I did at least this once for the experience.

A recent business trip brought us to Sioux Falls and we wanted local comfort food after a long day of travel. This place was great. The service was good with a very honest waiter that was happy to help answer questions. The mac n cheese fritters were out of this world and enough to be a meal on their own. The breakfast poutine should come with a warning to say caution - order if starved or wearing your fat pants. It was amazing, hearty, and rich in flavor and enough to feed a small country. I wouldn't hesitate to go back again. This place had a wonderful selection of great menu items.

Stopped in for lunch while in town on business. I believe Kelly was our waiter and he was perfect. I had the Sausage and Pork Jambalaya and it was amazing. This place is definitely worth a stop if you're in town.

I love this place. Any time I'm in Sioux Falls, my first thought is always "I need to go get a meal at the diner". This week I successfully managed to drag my coworkers with me, and it reminded me of just how much I love this place. Every time i've been i've gotten the same thing -- the monte cristo -- because I firmly believe it is one of the best monte cristos in existance. This week was no exception and a reminder that I should try to get back to Sioux Falls more often.

This was a nice place to hit. We had a large group, and they managed to arrange things to get us all in. The service was good, and so was the food. The only thing I could complain about was that they forgot the Cajun mayo on my spicy G burger. The waitress caught that however, and brought me some on the side. Otherwise, the shakes were awesome, and the poutine was as well. I wasn't expecting that outside of Canada.

I was immediately put off by the décor of this place. It's as if they hadn't updated their restaurant in decades. (The outside looks like a diner from the 1950's!) The place was clean, but I was expecting a more modern eatery. I had to chuckle when I saw "shakes" listed on the menu! Shakes? Really? What decade is this? The 1950's? The food choices sure looked delicious but I ordered a salad out of fear of experiencing food that tastes really good. Much to my surprise, the salad was good too. I imagine my food tastes better now than it would have in the 1950's. The service was quick and efficient. The staff was friendly, although I doubt any of them were born in the 1950's because most of their breasts were still perky and spectacular. I would eat here again, if I felt like pretending I was in the 1950's or something. Five out of five stars.

My family and I are taking a western road trip and we stopped here for dinner. We make four and we each tried each other's dinner. The loaded chili and the meatloaf were horrible. Neither the meatloaf nor the chili had ANY flavor. However, the chicken and waffles and the turkey club was delicious. My only complaint about the chicken and waffles is that they gave maple syrup but not hot sauce. The best was the turkey club. The fries were pretty good too. It was kind of a hit or miss; you either get something really good or really bad.

This place was very nostalgic. Like an old diner. Yes the have milk shakes and old soda pop. But they also serve beer and wine. I liked that they had breakfast all-day. I rose late and wanted a good breakfast. That's what I got. I ordered the two-two-two. Eggs, meat, pancakes or French toast. I loved the andouille sausage it was a bit spicy and delicious. I ate it all first. The pancakes were so big I could only eat half. Eggs are eggs. What I like most was it was busy, lots of locals. Which to me says a lot. Good service and good coffee. Sitting at the counter I watched as the food come out. NO HEAT LAMPS! As soon as the food was ready a guy was delivering. Yes I would go again next time I'm in Dakota.

Great food. Decently priced. Love the atmosphere. Not five stars only because the menu is a bit extensive.

Typical diner but with way more. Beer and wine (only two, red or white) along with tons of coffee and shake selections. Food wasn't too bad. Waitress was more distracted by other tables so we saw her once after we got our food. Food wasn't too bad, we would definitely try something different next time. Maybe a shake!

The food is good. Typical diner food. I would have rated this higher if it weren't for the fact that literally every time we've come by (and we visit frequently since we are SF residents & my children love the malts) we've had some random excuse given to us to for delayed seating. I'd start listing the reasons, but it would be pointless. The point is, be prepared to be told there is a wait even if you see open tables inside & out.

If you are in the mood for comfort food this is the place to go! I had a wrap that had chicken and mashed potatoes with ranch in it....it was amazing!

Great little downtown place. Went for breakfast during breakfast hours. Waitress was prompt and helpful, we asked for suggestion and she told us the banana bread french toast as one of them. We had that and a denver omlet and shared. Food was good, hot and arrived quickly. HOLY COW, she wasn't joking about the banana bread french toast. It was fantastic!! The service was great, food was awesome. Can't wait to go back!

Great veggie and classic burger. Recommend the house chips. Service is friendly. Small wait on a Saturday but worth it.

Food was not traditional diner food, over salted and service mediocre. However, their shakes were amazing!

What a great diner! We had corned beef hash and the breakfast poutine. Fantastic! Fresh ingredients and very well prepared. I've never seen a dish like this poutine!

What a great restaurant in the heart of the city. The term "diner" can be tricky when navigating the jungle of restaurants. The place was clean and tidy.... Good sign. Russell was our waiter and he did a fantastic job. He suggested an app at lunch... The cheese curds... Yummy! The kids meals were a perfect size. I had the sticky noodle salad! So fresh and delicious. I would highly recommend! I have no negative things to share! Definitely deserving of all 92pts on Urbsn Spoon and then some!

Great food! Friendly help and fun atmosphere. It is very busy so if you are in a hurry it's not the best place to go but there is take out. Great burgers and malts but the salads are good too. Built like a 50s diner.

Great breakfast! Loved the atmosphere, quaint diner in downtown Sioux Falls. I was impressed to see such a modern touch on all the dishes! I would highly recommend!

Pretty good burgers. Went here because the boy was starving and he wanted a pb&j. Saw that they had a burger with pb& j on the menu and figured they ought to have one and they did. I got the spicy burger & that was good. My husband got the pb&j burger and said that was good too. Good service, good food, reasonable prices. Would definitely eat here again if in the area. Lots of crazy milkshake choices too! Yum!

Wow! We're from the East Coast and therefore had Expectations for a diner...but this place met + exceeded, at least for breakfast! The menu is more upscale than a Jersey diner, but it's all good. I had the Farmer's Scramble; husband had the Poutine, both huge and VERY good. Piece de resistance: not only did they have many kinds of tea, but they brought it in a mug 3x the size of the coffee mug. How many times have you, a tea drinker, despaired of getting a second hot cup? Voila - awesome.

Never been disappointed here! Great service and food. Some unique selections on the menu. The diner dog and mashed potato chicken wrap are a couple of my favorites.

Absolutely delicious. Meatloaf. When I'm in Sioux Falls, this is always the place I go. You can't go wrong with this place as they have a really friendly staff and truly delicious food. I've only been there during the work week for dinner, but each time the meal was spot on!

I have already reviewed Phillips Avenue Diner but I have to provide this update. On Saturday it was my daughter's birthday, so my wife was calling around to find a place that would sing Happy Birthday. She called them and the person on the phone said that "technically it's against policy, but I'd sing to her anyways", so we went there. We learned that lunchtime on Saturdays is a busy time. It took us a while to get seated, but it was worth the wait. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive and the food was excellent, as always. The best part of the meal, though, was when we asked our waitress about singing to our daughter. She returned with a big ice cream sundae and three other staff members who sang a very nice rendition of Happy Birthday to our 3 year old. They always have great service and great food. And adding on top of it their willingness to go the extra mile for their customers guarantees that we will be repeat customers.

Loved, loved, loved this place. We stopped here for brunch on our way through town. I had eggs benedict and it was AWESOME. The eggs were perfectly cooked, and the hollandaise sauce was rich and creamy with a proper lemony zing. It came with crispy hash browns. My companion had the buffalo shrimp po-boy. He reports that it was awesome. The shrimp were not overcooked and the buffalo sauce was tasty. The service was excellent. I never saw the bottom of my coffee cup, and the waitress was warm and pleasant. All in all, two thumbs up.

Based on Yelp and TA reviews decided to try this place and were definitely not disappointed. Dinner was great with good, well prepared, upscale diner fare served by very friendly and helpful staff. We loved it so much we decided to go back the next morning (on way out of town) for breakfast and were equally pleased. If in Rapid City this is a must go!

We had 2 Autumn specials for dinner. They were delicious. We sat outside and it was a very pleasant evening. The flys were annoying but we were outside. Very good service. The place was very busy.

Awful veggie burger - a bit like a cool, congealed patty of oatmeal. White bun or wheat bread the only choice. I should have foregone both. Burned, greasy sweet potato fries. Hamburger was very good. So maybe ok for a beef eater. I won't be back.

We came here because Yelp said they had free wi-fi and we needed to eat something. The menu was pretty limited for us but we figured we'd just sit and have appetizers and coffee for an hour or two. We arrived and were seated in the coldest table of all time. The restaurant is like a walk-in freezer. We ask a waitress to turn it down and she said she had no control over it. Fine, whatever. We order and then ask for the wi-fi password. Nobody knows it. Great. A family walks in with about a dozen people and our waitress forgets we exist. By the time we got our food, it was cold, and the air conditioner made sure we couldn't even enjoy it lukewarm. We never get a drink refill, and before we even finish our meals the waitress drops our check. Guess we aren't welcome to hang out. We ended up finding a more hospitable public bench to get some work done.

I stopped here last week since I had time before I headed to the airport. I was there at 1 PM on a weekday, but there was still a 10-15 minute wait for a table, so I choose to sit at the counter. Service was quick, although she forgot my root beer until well into the meal. (I had not said anything, because I was watching milkshakes being made and I had already decided to have one, and did not need a root beer also.) I had a Burger of Champions and choose a side of cole slaw. The burger was delicious and substantial. The cole slaw, while having an appealing look, had almost no flavor. For dessert, I had a Banana Nilla Thriller milkshake. Very very good!

Was in town for a wedding and dear husband and I were looking for a great breakfast spot ... PAD truly hit the spot! There was a little wait, but we opted to sit immediately at the counter. The bustling kitchen activity was like breakfast and a show ... and lots of good looking creations were coming out at a steady pace. I ordered the Two Two and Two - the cakes were wonderful and eggs cooked just like I ordered and the bacon thankfully was not that nasty fake smoked flavor that some places offer. Dear husband ordered the "Champagne Breakfast" - although listed as being served with a beer, he opted for juice :) The hearty hash like breakfast was flavorful, and although he feared the chipotle hollandaise sauce, and asked for it on the side, he was happily surprised and loved the flavor combination! It was the perfect addition to his meal! Service was fairly quick and everyone was friendly ... we will return for sure!

I'm a bit of a Biscuits & Gravy snob, and they were FANTASTIC here! Light and fluffy biscuits, perfectly spiced gravy with just the right amount of zesty sausage chunks. Definitely a high point of my trip to Sioux Falls!

Avocado BLT was yummy, though not heart-healthy.(lots of butter) and the Beef dip was "typical" for a diner. Friendly and easy-going service. Very enjoyable.

My parents love this place, which makes perfect sense. They have some quality diner food for some decent prices, and an interesting attempt at a cajun twist to a lot of their dishes. I think that's pretty recent as their menu just changed a while back.

Awesome spot with great ambiance. The place was packed at 8:30 Thursday night. The tomato bisque was delicious as well as the country Cobb with a BBQ creamy dressing. Playing great music from the sixties. We were driving through SD from California and this was our favorite diner in 11 states. Our waitress, Marti, was very cool and friendly. Try this place out! Also, the milkshakes and desserts looked amazing!

Stopped in for lunch on our way through Sioux Falls based on Yelp reviews and were not disappointed. Their shakes are amazing, the servers were friendly and very helpful. We're already talking about making a trip to Sioux Falls again soon just so we can eat there again.

The diner has become one of our regular, and favorite, spots. Everything on the menu is at least good, if not excellent. They have a solid regular menu and a seasonal menu that feature your standard diner food with a twist. The restaurant is on the smaller side, so sometimes, especially on Sundays, you have to wait, but it is well worth it. The staff is super friendly and will usually go out of their way to accommodate your requests. Sit on the patio if you get a chance.

They have a large menu - lots of variety. Friendly service. In addition to full service, sit down meal, they have a coffee bar, so you can just walk in and get a coffee or latte to go if desired.

Our favorite go to place to eat in town. The menu offers diner staples that fit my husband's picky eating habits but offers enough twist on their traditional diner food to please my need to try new things. Great cozy atmosphere too.

First time at Phillips diner, great cozy atmosphere. I had the eggs Benedict and the eggs were perfectly done, fluffy!! Just how they should be. My boyfriend had the banana bread French toast, he said it was excellent and would definitely have it again. OH and the milk shake was fantastic. Would recommend to anyone looking for a laid back casual place to eat.

We've been there 5 times over the last year and it gets progressively worse. The last time with friends visiting we went there for breakfast. One order was for corned beef hash. The corned beef was in the form of fairly sizeable cubes that were tough and very hard to chew. The waitress offered to bring him something else so ordered another breakfast item. After nearly 30 minutes and 3 reminders it finally arrived; cold.

We stopped in here on a Sunday post breakfast rush and overall I liked the place. It was fun to people watch and the food was better than your average diner. They have great coffee and the glass case at the front door was filled with goodies that made my mouth water. Sadly I was full after breakfast and didn't get to sample the awesomeness it contained. Overall I liked my food. The hashbrowns were cooked through but not burnt or dry. The sausage was hot and plump. The eggs were cooked just liked I asked. Skip the English muffins though. We think they just throw them on the grill rather than toast them - yuck. The negatives here are the noise level is a little high - We had a hard time hearing each other at times. And the bathrooms need to be checked more often. I had to play musical stalls trying to find the least skanky one.

This place is fantastic! It has the look of a classic diner and an awesome outdoor patio. The food offers a nice variety. I had the breakfast burrito with eggs, cheese, peppers, sausage, and bacon. It was huge but it was so good I nearly ate the entire thing. My wife also enjoyed the Apple Walnut salad. I would recommend this place to anybody looking for breakfast or lunch. Definitely sit outside if the weather is nice.

One of the most important things a food establishment should accomplish is to keep their costumers wanting to go back for more. Mission accomplished! I have been in Sioux Falls for a few days, and have chosen this diner over the other many choices around. While the other choices are delicious, and appealing, I am drawn back to the delicious food, and kind costumer service I encounter every time I go back. You will find many yummy breakfast options, as well as great burgers, and dinner items. If you are in town, and are looking for a charming diner experience, don't hesitate to check them out.

They have a killer black bean burger on the menu for veggies - I'm not sure if it's vegan or not, but there's some sauce on it that looked like mayo. Portions are juuust right here - you probably won't be taking food home, but you'll leave satisfied. Service was great, non-intrusive but attentive.

Awesome place to get breakfast. Biscuits and gravy were excellent. Great daily breakfast specials. Try the "Bacon Benny the 3rd." It's a twist on eggs benedict with grilled biscuits, bacon, asparagus, basted eggs, and chipotle hollandaise. So good!

Are they the best restaurant ever? No. Are they really great? Yes. I've had a hard time finding healthy food while on the road, and surprisingly, this diner has it. Even if your lunch partner gets the fries, they aren't greasy, which at a diner is saying something. They have breakfast options all day from what I can tell. The ham is fantastic, and the salmon burger I had was delicious too. I admit I went back the next day and had the waffle (oh YUM). The service was friendly and good, the place was comfortable, and it's a locally owned restaurant rather than some chain. Can't lose, if you ask me. I am going back one more time before I leave town!

Since it is downtown, one needs to pay to park even in what looks like the Diner's lot. 25¢ for 20 minutes in a meter. I had the Eggs Benedict which looked absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately they were less than wonderful. The sauce was pretty, but tasteless, and the eggs were overcooked (hard boiled- so no way could the yolk mix with the sauce). There was NO lemony taste in this batch. The ham was excellent and a very generous slice too. Service was mediocre at best. Never could get glass of water refreshed even after shaking the ice almost in front of the server. And no smiles at this place. Pleasant enough place and very clean.

All I can say is get the Bonzai Burger (if you like spicy/sweet) AWESOME! Very cool atmosphere, but can get pretty busy over the lunch hour. Be prepared to wait.

They have a variety of foods there. Lots to choose from, and everything is good. We had the fried cheese curds for appetizer which were awesome! There is a limited menu for breakfast, but the breakfast is also good! I also had the patty melt for lunch, I had to add salt, but overall it was delish. I'll be back!

Not entirely certain why I keep coming back here...perhaps it's the convenience since I live in downtown SF. I'm never very pleased with the food, and it seems lately that the service has really slipped. I visited the Diner this Saturday with my daughter, and we sat at the counter for a good 10 minutes before anyone even said hello. We finally got water and were able to place our order. Again, the food has slipped and the menu is very limited. I've tried and tried to like this restaurant, but it just simply isn't there. I gave it a second star only because of the shakes and malts.

This is no Jersey diner, but it's still pretty awesome. I've never been here for anything but brunch. Hopefully the next time I'm in Sioux Falls, I'll be able to venture past the breakfast food fare. I've had the steel cut oatmeal and the blueberry pancakes on recent visits. I found the oatmeal a little dry for my liking, but it was still quite good. They serve it with pecans, raisins and brown sugar.. yummy. However, the blueberry pancakes were the real gem. The pancakes were loaded. I mean oozing out the corners loaded, with blueberries. The pancakes were perfectly crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside. perfection. In the summer, the patio is lovely. I can't wait until the next time I'm in Sioux Falls so that I can go back to the diner!

Great food and a lot of it. Fast and friendly service. The place looks like it cost a lot to build. There is a neat coffee shop/bakery in the front if you're in a hurry. Very special place.

Good biscuits and gravy and coffee. My waitress s was slow and not at all attentive. Pink hair. Face piercings. Minus a few brain cells. Probably really fun to hang out with at a heavy metal concert, though.

  • Kevin O.

The food is great, and I have a difficult time ordering, because so many items on the menu look tempting. The service is also very good & friendly. There's a convenient public (metered on weekdays) parking lot located just behind it, and its located in the most interesting part of downtown Sioux Falls (and its NOT a chain, which should be obvious from the name). Frankly, I can't think of anything negative to say about this place. Its not even expensive (calling it "cheap" would be a stretch, but its certainly not pricey). I even left my briefcase in the lobby, and they totally had it waiting for me when I returned. The food is delicious; highly recommended.
